Microsoft Doubles Down on Vague Douchebaggery

Mephisto Mori/ June 10, 2013/ Video Games/ 0 comments

E3 provided Microsoft with an opportunity to set the record straight on their vague, at best, orginal PR for the XBox One; an opportunity they took to say piss off instead and sell more crap.  The answers to topics that have worried gamers since the first official announcement remained dodgy if addressed at all. So here we are, E3, an

Maybe I’m old…

I’ve raged about a number of next generation features (or lack thereof) for a while.  At the top of my list is mandatory internet connection for single player games.  There’s a special place in Hell for the assholes responsible. At the bottom: reverse compatibility.  It’s the last thing I’d complain about. Reverse compatibility is not the norm for console.  We

Driving and MMOs

Mephisto Mori/ May 31, 2013/ Video Games/ 0 comments

MMO communities are an awful lot like drivers in a traffic jam.  They’re assholes. When given anonymity and an audience, everyone becomes a douche.  This is a known law of the universe best illustrated by a 2004 Penny Arcade strip: The parallels between people in a traffic jam and online communities are less commonly referenced, however.  I realized it today myself

Alan Wake humble bundle. Only four days left.  Alan Wake has more than earned this insomniac’s stamp of approval.  If you haven’t played it yet for one reason or another, I highly recommend you do.   You get to pick your own price ffs.  You can even feel slightly better that you’re gaming for charity. And if your forgot.  Here’s

Xbox One: An Opinion

Mephisto Mori/ May 24, 2013/ Video Games/ 1 comments

I just wanted to take a moment to talk about the Xbox One on my website about video games. Something truly amazing happened this last week.  A high-impact icon of an industry ascended to God-like status.  It’s hard to believe that less than seven days ago David Beckham retired. It was a tear-filled ceremony and one of those “big moments”

…and Another Thing

Bioshock Infinite’s greatest success is that it delivers a story in a way no other artistic medium can. Video games are an emerging art form.  The list of titles that fully utilize the interactive story telling aspects of games, combine it with visual art, and all the boons of a good soundtrack are very few. Bioshock Infinite is a game you can

Still Talking About Bioshock Infinite

Mephisto Mori/ April 24, 2013/ Video Games/ 0 comments

I’ve let my initial reaction to the ending simmer long enough.  Time to continue talking about this game. After more meditation on the ending and speaking with some friends I’ve decided it’s still a bad.  It’s not entirely Bioshock Infinite’s fault though.  I had heightened expectations.  There were natural handicaps to the pseudoscience.  Worse the storytelling gets stretched thin in

Bad End

Mephisto Mori/ April 13, 2013/ Video Games/ 1 comments

The end of a video game should never leave you in bed asking “well, why the fuck would they do that?” for an hour.  Contemplating subtle nuances in storytelling and interpreting meanings are good things.  When an overt god-robot smacks you in the face with “the point” and the point is stupid… somebody dropped the ball. The two “major reveals” were

Infinite Update

Mephisto Mori/ April 12, 2013/ Video Games/ 0 comments

Bioshock Infinite is an enjoyable game.  I’d hate to say it could’ve been better but the statement holds.  The PC version is laden with obvious console handicaps.  can only carry two guns, no quicksave; horrible menus to name a few. Developers… Why continue to poison the shooter fountain when it’s already drying up?
