Nostalgia-ing So Hard Right Now

Stephen King refers to writing (even for the struggling writer) as “the day job.”  An author before he “makes it big” has another job though – the one that pays the bills.  Well the job that pays the bills for me, is working middle management at a pretty sweet bookstore.

While working today, I happened upon an old Nintendo Power magazine, this one featuring Ness of Earthbound.  I immediately teared up as I beheld the cover.  Damn that was a good game – is a good game, I should say, this one holds up.

I remember going to K-Mart; yes, K-mart, and picking up the gargantuan boxed edition for an unheard of 70 dollars.  Earthbound may have caused my first true bout with (w)insomnia.  I played it relentlessly that school week.  Each time I heard foot steps near my bedroom I would turn off my TV and rush into bed.  The penalty for being caught playing video games at 4 a.m. (with school mere hours away) was revocation of my SNES.

I struggle to think of a current generation title to hold this sway over me…

I’m not saying this generation lacks insomnia inciting titles, just, damn… wasn’t Earthbound amazing?

Damn you Nintendo Power… you deserve to go out of print for what you did to me today.

  1. Oh by the way – if you haven’t heard Nintendo Power will be ceasing publication… I could’ve “blogged” on that in a more timely and direct manner but, to be honest, I’ve been in denial. Today’s battle with nostalgia over the Nintendo Power featuring Ness forced me to confront many different unresolved emotions.
