What has the Internet done?!
Something awesome, that’s what.
The non-profit Internet Archive added 2400 files to their Classic PC Games section yesterday. The addition brings the collection to over 6000 items. The bulk of the expansion was comprised of 1990s DOS games. Wolfenstein 3D, Classic SimCity, Commander Keen, and even Number Munchers all grace the Archive. Many games can be played directly from your browser of choice, others will require some tinkering with DOSBox or Windows Virtual PC.
Don’t worry, you’re not a pirate if you play them. The titles available in the Classic PC Collection are mostly freeware, shareware, and demos. Internet Archive is actually a pretty bad ass site with a pretty noble mission: To preserve cultural artifacts in digital form. From video games, to concerts, to websites. They’re basically like a public library for the Internet.
The Internet is the largest collection of knowledge since the Library of Alexandria. It’s nice to see it used for something besides porn or trolling people.
