A Little Justification for my Madden Post

I’m not a big fan of sports games. They’re the genre I play the least. Don’t get me wrong, I had a few I liked growing up.

A short list:

Tecmo Bowl (the original)

Super High Impact Football

Super Baseball 2020

NBA Jam (because who didn’t like a little BoomShakaLaka?)

Mutant League Hockey

and Mutant League Football.  Especially Mutant League Football – my god that game is awesome.  Seriously, stop reading. Go find a used copy of it. You will not be disappointed.

There’s a theme to the list. They’re usually on the unrealistic side of the sports spectrum. With the one I like the most being the most ridiculous, Mutant League Football.

As gaming has evolved, sports games have gotten much more realistic. And I’ve lost interest. Madden has gotten peculiar in the amount of sports knowledge necessary to select plays and do well. There’s a lot of “scheming.” That’s not a bad thing necessarily. Every genre has a learning curve. There’s a huge timesink in becoming exceptional at an FPS for instance.

There’s not story to draw me in. Ludicrous wrestling move tackles. And the time to reward ratio is too great. Add in the repurchasing what is essentially the same game each year and, well, you get the picture. Not for me.

So when I share a Madden video, I want it to be understood just how awesome I find it. There’s a surrealism to an NFL player playing themselves in a video game that I appreciate.  Oh, and I’m a big fucking fan of the Green Bay Packers. Go Pack Go!
