16-Bit Saturday, A Gamer Holiday

As previously mentioned, I intend to start a gamer holiday.

I make fun of games pretty hard.  Most of them deserve it.  But even CoD began as a well-intentioned, dime-a-dozen, PC WWII sim.  Between the pay-to-win micro-transactions stifling innovative game design and metacritic clauses in developer contracts killing healthy companies… we need a day to remember what video games are about…

Having fun.

The polarization of gaming has become worse. Console wars and brand loyalty are things being propagated by the Industry to drive sales and exacerbated by us.  It gets difficult to remember a time when someone owning a different console meant befriended them to get a shot at Vector man, rather than insult them on the internet.

I want a day to remember that all gamers are created equal.  A day to game with impunity, free of discrimination.

We deserve an excuse to celebrate escapism and video games in all their glory. Regardless of Console or PC. Mario or Sonic.  Masterchief or Gordon Freeman.

Most importantly, we deserve a day to call into work, spend vacation time, and sit on our overworked, underpaid asses and play some Tetris motherfuckers.

I’m celebrating by hooking up half a dozen TVs in my living room, each with a different console.  I’m inviting all my friends over to play video games and forget the stress of adulthood.  One day to not worry about a car payment, or rent, or whether my son will grow up to see an education system that provides him with opportunity rather than debt.

The day is Saturday, July 27th.  Tell your friends.  Take your loved ones aside and tell them, “Ya know… I used to be pretty baller at Street Fighter 2 Turbo” or “I’ve got a mean Sonic 2 speedrun.”

Until next time, Winsomniacs… Good Gaming.
