Video Games for the Uninitiated

In my Portal 2 Review I assert that the first Portal game is the one I would use to initiate the unfamiliar to modern video games.

After much deliberation that list has grown.

It’s difficult to find games to recommend to people with little more than a couple Mario levels or Farmville under their belt.  I do think it’s possible to indoctrinate a few nerds from other circles into ours.  The two games (yes now two) that I would recommend for those not very familiar with video games are Portal and The Walking Dead by Telltale Games.  I admit I’m using the Zombie Hype of the last one… but the point stands.

The Walking Dead is a story driven game that most people could get behind.  The greatest challenge in recommending this game comes in disarming the skepticism of Zombie Haters (like myself) to play it anyway.  The gameplay is basic but serves to enhance the story and can cause challenges and divergence in the narrative.  It’s available on a variety of platforms and is cheap.  The first episode can be played through in a one hour sitting (lower investment than a movie) and will leave you pondering your decisions outside of the game.

Food for thought.  What games would you recommend to bring non-gamers into the modern scene?

I bring this all up because both my review for this week and my Confession post on Friday will be drawing from a couple concepts addressed here.
